The CSC, in collaboration with ETSC, has experimentally started multicasting of live events in the IITD intranet. This facility can be used for live multicast of Institute lectures and events to all desktops within IITD. The preliminary testing of the multicasting service is starting with live feeds of Doordarshan broadcast of the semi final and the final of the Cricket World Cup, 2011 in the IITD network. The multicast can be accessed at rtp://239.192.1.1:1234. The multicast stream will not be available in the WiFi network.
The CSC recommends VLC as the media client for accessing IITD multicasts. VLC is available for Linux, Mac or Windows, and can be obtained and installed from the VLC web-page. To access the multicast stream in VLC, the user has to specify rtp://239.192.1.1:1234 (multicast ip 239.192.1.1, port 1234) in the Open Network Stream tab. VLC can also be started from the command-line interface with the command vlc rtp://@239.192.1.1:1234.
One can also use other media clients like mplayer, Quicktime or Media player for accessing the multicast stream. Please check the documentation of these media clients for usage details.
